Elgardt ("Bud") Henry Maahs, 93, of Sun Lakes, AZ, passed away on February 21, 2017, at Hospice of the Valley in Gilbert, AZ. After having lived most of his life in Hartford, WI, and being a winter visitor to Arizona for 18 years, he and his late wife, Georgianne Maahs, moved to Arizona permanently in 2012. At the time of her passing, they had been married for 65 years.
Elgardt was born November 29, 1923, to Alma and Edwin Maahs. After high school, he joined the Army Air Corp in 1942, and flew B-24 bombers based in China. After WW II, he attended a technical school and, upon graduation, got a job with the West Bend Aluminum Company and moved to Hartford, WI. He met Georgianne there, they married in 1949, and they lived there until their move to Arizona in 2012. In addition to being a loving husband and father, he was involved in the Lions Club, and The Threshold in West Bend (an organization that helped people with disabilities gain independence, employment and inclusion in their communities). Elgardt and Georgianne had three daughters: Sally Maahs, Susan (Michael) Allen, and Betsy(deceased) (Glenn) Rix. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Scott (Danielle) Kwaterski, Stephen (Laura) Kwaterski, Cpt. Jonathan Rix, and Kathryn Allen, and four great-grandchildren.
Family will receive relatives and friends Saturday, March 25,2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Berndt-Ledesma Funeral Home-Hartford. Memorial service will follow at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m Fr. Lars Skogland & Fr. Mike Tess will officiate; with subsequent internment at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to The Threshold in West Bend, WI, Hospice of the Valley, Phoenix, AZ, St. Matthew's Episcopal Church Building Fund in Chandler, AZ, or St. Aidan's Episcopal Church in Hartford, WI.
