Hilmer Arthur Abel of Juneau passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the age of 91 years.  He was born on August 14, 1925 in Oak Grove Township, Dodge County, the son of Edwin and Verna (nee Richardt) Abel.  He attended St. John’s Lutheran Elementary School and was a 1942 Juneau High School graduate.  On August 25, 1946, he was united in marriage to Ruth Zank at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Newville, WI.  Together they farmed and milked cows, first on a rented farm.  In 1951, the bought their own farm.  Along with crops and cows, they raised five children, one of which still lives on the farm today.   Ruth preceded Hilmer in death on August 24, 1993.  On September 24, 1994, he was united in marriage to Ramona Bruni at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Juneau.   In their retirement, they enjoyed traveling.  Ramona preceded him in death on September 13, 2015.  Hilmer was an avid bowler, at one time bowling four night per week.  In his younger years, he played baseball on the St. John’s Church team.  He was President of St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran Church congregation in Oak Grove.  At one time he sang in the church choirs at St. Peter’s and at St. John’s in Juneau.  He enjoyed many nights playing cards with his neighbors and loved attending Brewers games with his buddy, Dan Jablonski. 

Hilmer is survived by his five children, Vernon (Linda) Abel of New Berlin, Christine (David) Gerbitz of Juneau, Julie (Marty) Ninmann of Hustisford, Heidi (Gary) Stark of Juneau, Lois (David) Wendlandt of Randolph, one step-son, Lee (Mari) Bruni of Juneau, seven grandchildren, Paul Abel, Justin (Jodi) Ninmann, Adam (Katie) Ninmann, Samantha (Andrew) Freber, Matthew Stark, Kyle (Jessica) Wendlandt, Jordan (Megan) Wendlandt, five step-grandchildren, Lacy (Dan) Jablonski, Nic (Meghan) Lauersdorf, Shelly (Steve) Coron, Eric (Michelle) Bruni, Kristy Bruni, six great-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren.  Hilmer is also survived by his brother, Virgil (Ruby) Abel of Beaver Dam, nieces, nephews, many relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wives, Ruth and Ramona, his brother and sister-in-law Howard and Margaret Abel, step-granddaughter Darlene Holz, and one great-granddaughter Lila Marie Stark.

Visitation is Monday, March 27, 2017 at the Berndt-Ledesma Funeral Home in Juneau from 5-8 p.m., and Tuesday at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church from 10-11 a.m.  Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church.  Rev. Paul Schupmann will officiate.  Interment Juneau City Cemetery. Memorials to Lakeside Lutheran High School or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.  The Berndt-Ledesma Funeral Home - Juneau is serving the family.
