Brother Augustine Wharf OCD Obituary

Brother Augustine (James Robert) Wharf of the Holy Trinity, O.C.D. was born in Somerville, MA on June 21, 1932. He died on July 14th, 2025 at the age of 93 at St. Patrick’s Manor, 863 Central Street, Framingham MA.

Brother Augustine entered the Discalced Carmelites and made his Solemn Vows on July 16, 1966. He joined the Order with great talent as a tailor. He worked tirelessly for sixty-nine years providing habits for all the friars in our Province. He also worked as the sacristan in the monastery and cut the lawns on the John Deere Mower. In the last five years he was incapacitated by injuries from a fall. Despite his condition he was able to pass on his knowledge of tailoring to a young friar who was eager to learn. Brother “Augi” will continue to minister to the friars through his gift of teaching.

He was the son of James Henry Wharf and Ruth (nee Stone) Wharf of Somerville, MA. His siblings are Ruth Wharf Differ of Winchester, MA, Gail Wharf Stafford of Woburn, MA, Virginia Wharf Port of Billerica, MA, and Jean Wharf Simonds of Woburn, MA; predeceased by Leona Wharf Hajny, Neal Anthony Wharf and Estelle Marie Wharf. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The viewing will take place on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at 10 AM followed by 11 AM Funeral Mass in the Discalced Carmelite Monastery, 166 Foster Street, Brighton MA.

The Committal Service will take place later in Erin, Wisconsin at the Basilica of Our Lady Help of Christians at Holy Hill, WI; and the burial will follow in the Carmelite Cemetery there.
