Joan D. Zehe (nee Durkee) passed away peacefully on the early morning of Thursday, February 6, 2020, at the age of 88 years. Joan was born December 21, 1931, daughter of Henry and Ruby (nee Dellenbach) Durkee.
Joan married her soulmate, Walter L. Zehe Jr. in May 1960 and were married for 31 years until his sudden passing on July 8, 1991. Joan was always welcoming new friends in, as her home was the local chiropractic office ran by her late husband. As a proud military veteran wife, Joan was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Allenton American Legion Post and participated in volunteer activities such as, placing flags on veteran gravestones in the cemetery and cooking hamburgers at the Allenton picnic. Joan loved to have fun by going to different bars, playing card games and bingo, and being on a dart league. She loved dogs and cats, visits from her grandchildren, and knitting and baking. Joan was known for putting smiles on everyone’s face with her silly and upbeat personality. Her ideal way to relax was spending her free time on crossword puzzles, eating cookies, and watching the trains go by out the window.
Joan survived by her three loving sons: Brian (Tina) Zehe, Kevin (Ellie) Zehe, and Colin (Joy) Zehe; 6 granddaughters: Melissa (Jacob) Sabel, Amanda (Michael) Viers, Kayla Zehe, Jennifer Zehe, Nicole Zehe, and Tabitha Zehe; and one grandson, Colton Zehe, and three great-grandchildren. Also survived by younger siblings: Delores Kuik, Claudia Kennedy, Roger Durkee, and Irene Witz.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Walter, brother Henry Durkee Jr. and sister Carolgean Wiensch, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends
